14.10            "Rootless: A Video Sculptural Response to the Disconnected in Cape Town - Skeletal Visibilities in the City". Lunch lecture by Jade Gibson (Blandijnberg 2, Grote Vergaderzaal; 12.00 pm - 1.30 pm).

Abstract. This paper follows the construction and outcome of a series of installations based on an artwork, created by the author of this paper, which journeyed across central Cape Town. The artwork in question was a life-size replica of a human skeleton, made of tree twigs and branches. The skeleton artwork, on a day tour with the author and the another artist, Kitty Dörje, with the intention of collaborating in a short film of the work, visited Table Mountain Nature Reserve, Iziko Museum, Prestwich Street Memorial, Rhodes Memorial and the Table Mountain view on Blouberg Beach. Installations with the artwork were set up as a response to each environment and each event recorded as photographs and on video camera. Within the journey, new connotations began to occur between the skeleton and the places visited, the skeleton acting as a linking device. The themes for the poem and installations drew on Museums and Heritage research, seminars and colloquia, problematising issues around memorialisation, land, landscape, tourism, human remains, memory, archive, silences and history in Cape Town, as well as debates as part of the Cities in Transition project at the University of the Western Cape. The artwork was then displayed with the photographs, with an accompanying poem by the author, as an installation at Cape Town Station as part of ‘Infecting the City’ Arts Festival in 2011. A short film, ‘Rootless’, dedicated to ‘the silenced and forgotten people of Cape Town’, was created, based on the poem visually worked into the film narrative. This paper traces the experiential process of the construction of the artwork installations and the recontextualisation of the skeleton in different environments, as a creative research process. Through the artwork constructing visual and conceptual links between spaces and histories in the city, it is argued to visually disturb the material silencing and erasure of communities in past and present, to evoke plural perspectives and histories and to thus raise questions on issues of representation, in which landscape and artwork become alternative forms of archive.
